Insurance photo checklist after a storm
Before you clean anything, photograph every room from the doorway and up close, the water line on walls with a tape measure, damaged items with their model and serial numbers, and the outside of the house, roof and vehicles. Keep every receipt for tarps, hotels and repairs, since they may be needed for claims.
Information may be delayed or incomplete. Always verify with official sources and follow local officials.
FEMA's guidance for disaster survivors starts with exactly this: photos, a list of damages, and a claim with your insurer before you apply for aid (FEMA Individual Assistance).
- A wide shot of each room from the doorway, then close-ups
- The water line on walls, with a tape measure in the frame
- Model and serial numbers on appliances, electronics and HVAC
- Outside: roof, siding, fences, vehicles, the debris pile
- Receipts for tarps, fans, hotels, meals and emergency repairs
Tip: say the date and room out loud while you record video. The audio is a timestamp no one can argue with.
