Power outages
Report the outage to your utility and check its outage map for restoration estimates; your state's utilities are listed first once you pick a state. While you wait, run generators outside only, more than 20 feet from the house, keep the fridge and freezer closed, and stay away from downed power lines.
Information may be delayed or incomplete. Always verify with official sources and follow local officials.

Basement flooding? Sump pumps stop when the power goes out. If water is coming in, keep clear of outlets and the panel, and don't wade into a flooded basement while the power might be on.
What should I do while the power is out?
- Report the outage to your utility and check its outage map for restoration estimates.
- Stay away from downed power lines and anything touching them; report them to your utility. (CDC)
- Generators outside only, more than 20 feet from doors, windows and vents, never in a garage, with a battery CO alarm inside. (CDC)
- Keep the fridge and freezer closed. A fridge keeps food safe up to 4 hours; a full freezer about 48 hours (24 if half full). (FoodSafety.gov)
- Medical device or medicine that needs power? If it's life-threatening, call 911. Dial 211 for local help.
- Water got in? Once it's safe, dry wet areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold. (EPA)
