Common questions

Should I evacuate for a hurricane?
If officials order an evacuation for your zone, go. Florida's Division of Emergency Management says the greatest threat to life from a hurricane is storm surge flooding, and people in an ordered zone, a low-lying flood area or a mobile home should follow all evacuation orders.
How fast do I need to dry out a flooded home?
CDC says to clean up and dry out your home fully and quickly, within 24 to 48 hours after a flood, to prevent mold.
Can I run a generator in my garage?
No. CDC says never use a generator inside your home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Run it outside, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
Can I clean up mold myself?
EPA says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, roughly a 3 by 3 foot patch, most people can handle it themselves. Larger areas or a lot of water damage call for a professional.
How do I apply for FEMA assistance?
Check whether your county is declared for Individual Assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov and apply there, or call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362.
